The Rules of Scrapbooking

First rule of scrapbooking: there are no rules. Second rule of scrapbooking: if online resources say rules exist, refer to the first rule. Third rule of scrapbooking: if you think rules should exist, they’re your own.

Arguably the best thing about scrapbooking is that it doesn’t recognize any universal set of rules in making one. Should there be rules in online resources, they usually aren’t as widely-accepted as you think. Scrapbooking is one of the few aspects of life where you get the chance to go crazy and design your scrapbook the way you want and you won’t be judged for that freedom.

Even known rules such as the Rule of Thirds, a common principle in photography, aren’t always applicable. As with photography, the Rule of Thirds in scrapbooking positions the focal point at the intersections of a 3x3 imaginary grid. In other words, the focal point is located anywhere but the center of the page.

However—surprise, surprise—there are instances when you can forgo the Rule of Thirds, even in scrapbooking. For example, if you want a page in your scrapbook to be symmetrical in theme, ditch the Rule of Thirds. In addition, the Rule of Thirds doesn’t always guarantee great pages or photos; sometimes, breaking this principle creates interesting outputs.

So the next time you ask whether or not scrapbooking has rules to follow, remember the three rules earlier. Your scrapbook, your rules.

Manual vs Digital Scrapbooking

Preserving memories has become a descriptive and collaborative activity. The manner of preserving them has also evolved—from the traditional (literally) cut-and-paste type to the digital copy-paste, drag-and-drop variety. Today, scrapbooking faces an identity crisis—or maybe just a dual personality—where the traditional clashes with the digital, even though both have the same goal of immortalizing moments.

Traditional
Manual scrapbooking can be tedious due to its nature as a handcraft. However, the experience is a therapeutic one. The slow process of the old-fashioned way encourages focus and creativity. There's also excitement found in the concrete organization of paper, photos and paste. Scrapbook stores online make material-hunting much easier with their diverse range of decorative instruments.

One is also free to put a wide array of materials on tangible scrapbooks (i.e. tickets, playbills, money, brochures, and wristbands). Some things just cannot look and feel right when scanned on a computer.

Digital
Digital scrapbooks win in practicality. One can upload digital photos without needing to have them printed, and choose designs from his/her preferred software. Organizing and manipulating are also easier with this medium. Bad shots, for example, can be remedied easily. Old photos can be restored and kept in good shape.

One can also save time with the digital version. No more manual cutting and pasting are involved. Dragging, pasting, cropping, and editing are done with several clicks of the mouse.

Scrapbooking is not dead; the craft still thrives because of people's desire to preserve the memory of good times.

Liliana Rose Sign in Book

A few weeks ago a tragedy struck our family.  My brothers sweet baby passed away in her sleep at 4 months old.  it was a very hard ordeal for the whole family that came with some very hard times and actually some sweet memories.  It will be a time that will never be forgotten in our family.

We wanted to share with you the sign in book that my sister made for the funeral.  She is a very talented scrapbooker and I think it came together beautifully.  It is definitely something that will be treasured by my brother and his wife forever and by the rest of the family as well.

We wanted to share a video that was made by one of Rose's grandpas.  It was so sweet to see all these beautiful moments that they shared with their little girl.  We also wanted to express how important it is to take pictures and videos to capture all of these sweet moments.  You never know how long you have with someone and pictures are the perfect way to capture the memories you want to have with you for a lifetime.  If you would like to read her obituary you can do so here.

Thank you all for always supporting our small family business, we appreciate you more than you know!

Happy Crafting!

Start and Keep an Enjoyable Hobby with Nifty Scrapbook Stores Online

To get started, you have to think of the theme of your scrapbook. It could be special occasions or events like travel, concerts, holidays or dates. It could be a collection of the highlights of your calendar or school year, or even an extensive 365-page album for each day of the year. You could focus on your personal experiences, a special person like your partner or a certain set of people like your family and friends.

Next, you have to plan the timeline of your scrapbook. You can plan a chronological scrapbook and start from the earliest event going to the most recent. This allows you to add pages as you go along. You can also create one with past memories, where the finished product can be given as a gift or be viewed like an album.

Lastly, assemble your materials. Organize your photos and mementos according to your theme and timeline. Visiting online scrapbooking stores like AllScrapbookSteals.com allows you to get all the essential or basic materials like the glues, papers, albums and embellishments. Look back on the colorful moments of your life and you'll surely “put yourself back in a good state of mind.”
